after much, much stress, and quite a late night on friday, my mother (aka lifesaver) and i spent saturday in a quilt-making flurry. having a deadline of 2 pm? not fun, wouldn't recommend it. speed-quilting, however, should be considered as a sport, because it is quite an adventure. i was silly to predict that i would actually have time to post pictures on saturday. i literally took the pictures, wrapped the quilt, and was off. AND i was 45 minutes late to the shower (which actually was perfect, since that's when the mother-to-be arrived as well. perfect timing! anyway, i was successful - my mom and i made a quilt! and i have proof!
this is my quilt! it's brown and pink because my friend is having a girl, and all of her mommy accessories (diaper bag, etc) are brown and pink... when i saw that on her registry, and then saw this quilt kit in the store, i thought it was fate...

detailed views:
i felt that i had to document every aspect of this quilt - to put that much time and effort into something, and then wrap it up and give it away minutes later is pretty hard - i would have liked to have it sitting around for a week, so i could appreciate all that had gone into it. but alas, it wasn't to be.
the mommy-to-be loved it (she said it made her whole day), and all of my high school friends said i had an automatic invite to their baby showers in five years (or un-baby showers for those not wanting to have kids), as long as i make a quilt like that for them... so, that was pretty cool.
the hard part is though, the pressure you feel. at baby showers, they do the whole public presents thing (which, i have decided, i will not do, because it's so awful). and that's always a little bit of a pressure situation, since everyone compares what they got next to everyone else... but when it's something you made, something you put your blood, sweat and tears into, it's awful. my heart was pounding and my hands were shaking when she opened it. of course, everyone oohed and ahhed, but still, it's like a tiny piece of me was being held up in front of a group and judged. i assume that will get easier as i make more things, but still, it was pretty rough!
so, yay! success!
(i do have to say that my mom was quite instrumental in this process. she rocked the sewing machine for many hours to help get this done, and it would have been extremely lame without her...)
that being said, i'm never making a quilt on a deadline again. i do not recommend it.
the end!
